Program & Services

Immigration Program

La Raza’s legal team offers free and low cost services in a safe, confidential, bilingual space. Every year we help hundreds of clients achieve their goals.

We reunify families by guiding them through the complexities of the immigration process. We fight deportation and defend immigrants in court, helping them win asylum and Permanent Residence. We keep the community informed of its legal rights and help our clients unlock the benefits of employment authorization, Permanent Residence, and U.S. citizenship.

La Raza Community Resource Center is well-known organizations among San Francisco’s immigrant communities. For countless immigrants and refugees, we are the first point of contact in their search for information or legal assistance.

We take this responsibility very seriously.

In recent years we have expanded our Immigration Program to meet the increasingly complex challenges that the community faces today. Our legal team of three attorneys and three legal assistance works hand-in-hand with our Social Services team, volunteers, and nonprofit partners to deliver comprehensive legal services to community members in need.

La Raza has trained case managers that work with parents and families going through challenging times. We connect families to different government and community resources, including mental health referrals, accompaniment to immigration hearings, assistance with school registration. We also provide advocacy assistance with translation.

Family Services

  • Thanks to our partnerships with the San Francisco - Marin Food Bank and the in-kind donations of Food Runners our Food Pantry offers nutritious, local and organic groceries free of charge on a weekly basis to 1200 low income Latino families with children per month.

Weekly food distribution to families with children, takes place every Wednesday from 1PM to 5PM. The food pantry is run by a Food Pantry coordinator and parent volunteers. We are also a site for emergency food boxes for families and individuals.

  • Throughout the year La Raza offers parenting classes at our Center. “Martes Familiares” runs for 2 cycles per year, 12 classes each cycle and 2 hrs per session (1hr and via ZOOM during COVID-19). In these sessions, parents not only learn new skills about parenting, but also have the opportunity to share their experiences with other parents. During class, “child watch” is provided and snack for parents and children are served. During COVID-19, a Parent Leader works works in tandem with the teacher to provide activities for the children during parenting classes. Classes convene every Tuesday between 5PM-6PM.

  • Parental responsibilities can seem overwhelming. La Raza is committed to providing a safe space for women to share experiences and challenges. Our Women’s Support group “Hijas de la luna y el sol” offers the opportunity to help reduce stress, establish positive relationships, and connect with other women through cultural activities such as art and crafts, music and movement and other activities. We offer 10 sessions a year, 2 hrs each session.

  • Our program offers opportunities for parents to develop leadership and community engagement skills through workshops and informational community forums. The group is led by our family advocate. We also invite City leaders to do presentations. Our Parent Leaders are part of the BMR City Housing Program, teaching other parents how to apply for low income housing through DHALIA. Parent Leaders also help us with outreach and registration, especially around Immigrant Parent Voting for the San Francisco School District.

  • The San Francisco Emergency Rental Assistance Program (SF ERAP) is a community-based program jointly administered by the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development and the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing. SF ERAP aims to keep the City’s most at-risk tenants in their homes as part of the City and County of San Francisco’s anti-displacement and homelessness prevention efforts.
